Wooden Wonders we’d like to have French polished: 26. Hogwarts Castle from the Harry Potter series

November 14, 2011

Okay, so Hogwarts is actually made of stone. And fictional. And only visible to people with magical powers – but these are minor quibbles! Here at Terry Waters French Polishing, we’re never ones to shy away from a challenge, and we reckon the endless nooks, crannies and treasures of Hogwarts Castle would present the perfect opportunity for us to showcase our French polishing and wood restoration skills.

The heavy, wooden doors of Hogwarts would make an ideal starting point. Perhaps they’re made of cedar, like the wooden doors of the Ishtar gate we mentioned in one of our previous French Polishing blogs. Or perhaps they’re made of oak. Either way – in fact, whatever the wood – heavy wooden doors like these will require lots of TLC to help protect them from the elements and minimise expanding and shrinking of the wood in damp, and then parched, conditions. Our spray-finish lacquer service is perfect for protecting wood’s natural oils over a large surface area, thus helping to minimise future damage.

Moving on through the castle, for the long, rustic wooden tables in Hogwarts’ Great Hall, a spray lacquer might again be the best option. After all, these tables are big enough to seat scores of students at each – plus the wear and tear that this furniture is put to means you’ll want a practical, cost-effective and above all, speedy finish that will help to minimise future damage from scuff, scratches and greasy fingermarks.

We’ll save our specialist hand-finished French polishing services, then, for the areas of the castle where one would really want to showcase the opulence of wood. We’d love to get our hands on headmaster Professor Dumbledore’s wooden desk. We imagine this would be a maple or cherry-wood item; incredibly sensitive to light. When finished with layers of polish, built up painstakingly by our experts, we would bring out the wood’s natural grain and beauty and leave it shining like a sheet of brushed velvet. And that, as they say, is magic!
