If you have been keeping up with our French Polishing blog, you’ll know we are introducing you to the various vocabulary words that French polishers use. Today the word is “Fad.”
While you may guess that “fad” refers to how hip and modern we French polishers are, it in fact means something completely different (or should I say it ALSO means something different).
A Fad is the rubbing pad French polishers use to apply the shellac to wood. It is made of a square piece of cotton fabric that is filled with cotton or wool cloth. French polishers lubricate the fad with oil to allow it to give a smooth finish to wood, and the type of oil French polishers use on a fad depends on the desired glossy finish. The fad is also known as a tampon or muñeca.
So the next time you see a French polisher at work, drop a bit of French polishing vocab into a conversation and watch them smile.
