Remember Professor Yaffle, the stern, dry wooden bookend from classic 1970s children’s serial Bagpuss? He came to life with the other toys but spent much of his time, as the brains of the outfit, worrying about what the other toys were getting up to and scolding them for their behaviour. read more

Wooden Wonders We’d Like To Have French Polished: 6. De Havilland DH.98 Mosquito Aeroplane

The legendary De Havilland DH.98 Mosquito is famously known as the “Wooden Wonder”, precisely because the majority of it’s construction was made of various wood elements. Although Britain had access to Aluminium, this material was predominantly directed towards the production of Spitfires and Hurricanes, so the Air Ministry decided to investigate the possibility of an aircraft which could make the most use of non-strategic materials. read more
